Fund Raiser Performance starring Dr. Tawnya Pettiford-Wates
Fundraiser Celebrating 10 Years of Social Justice Theatre
Richmond, VA, February 4, 2011 – On February 19th at 8pm, Broadway veteran and Artistic Director of The Conciliation Project, Dr. Tawnya Pettiford-Wates, will bring to life Sojourner Truth in her solo performance titled A Woman Called TRUTH. One of the most iconic and revered women in American history, this performance highlights Sojourner’s famous, “Ain’t I a Woman” speech given in Akron, Ohio 1851.
A Woman Called TRUTH was developed for the Human Rights Education Institute, Chautauqua performance series at Idaho State College in 2006. Designed as a way, “to assist the public in understanding how historical events and leaders have helped shape and change our lives”, this performance gives the audience an opportunity to interview and dialogue with the character of Sojourner Truth.
Celebrating Black History Month and The Conciliation Project (TCP), Dr. Pettiford-Wates’ performance is the first of many fund raisers throughout 2011 for the 10-year old social justice theatre company. Founded 2001 in Seattle, Washington, TCP began as a way for students interested in activism and theatre to address the historic legacy of racism in America. TCP thrives in its 10th year and continues its mission of “promoting dialogue on racism in America” as Richmond’s social justice theatre company in the heart of the Confederacy.
Currently on the performance faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University Department of Theatre, Dr. Pettiford-Wates has an extensive background in performance, directing, and writing for the stage. She has appeared in the Broadway production of “For Colored Girls…” and in both National and International Touring Companies. Her television, film, industrial, voice over & commercial credits are extensive.
