The Conciliation Project presents
Richmond, VA, Oct 30, 2011 – The Conciliation Project is announcing its new production A Canary’s Call: dismantling the ‘master’s house’ to be presented at The Shafer Street Playhouse on Friday, December 2nd at 6:45pm. A reception will proceed the staged reading at Crenshaw House, 919 Franklin Street from 5:30 to 6:30pm
A Canary’s Call: dismantling the ‘master’s house’ is a satirical look into the world of the college and university system from the perspective of the women of color within it. The play itself is drawn from a combination of personal story, scholarly literature, scenes and historic events. The aim of “A Canary’s Call…” is to interrogate the experiential journey that is particular to women of color within the pursuit of an academic career. She is an outsider within the Master’s House and in order to survive, there are a peculiar set of unspoken, unseen and un-acknowledged rules and protocols that must be navigated. Although her goals include a basic expectation of “fair play” and pursuit of some semblance of normalcy, she finds it increasingly difficult to just breath within a toxic and oppressive environment. She is trapped inside a proverbial cage where she is displayed, required to perform and used to demonstrate the so-called progressive platform of diversity, inclusivity and equity until or unless her chirping becomes too loud or too annoying to be tolerated. In this event, if she is unaware or unwilling to comply with the collective set of regulations known and unknown, she will most certainly die a symbolic death in the depths of the academic mines.
